Graphite is an important alloying element in gray iron. The flakes of graphite are shaped like three-dimensional flakes. They act as pre-existing notches, and make the gray iron easily machinable. While the iron itself is very durable, it tends to break or crack across the graphite flakes.

The properties of gray cast iron vary considerably from one another. Some molding processes produce casts that have a very slow solidification rate, while others produce high solidification rates. This means that gray cast iron castings are a good choice for certain applications.
